COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The Bethel Royals won the team title at the MIAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, scoring 169 points. St. Olaf took 2nd place with 115 points, and St. John's was 3rd with 109 points. This is Bethel's 3rd consecutive Indoor title.
On Saturday, the Royals stacked up 29 points in the 200m dash. Grant Nelson won the race in a championship record time of 21.71 seconds, surpassing Jacob Parent's record of 21.80 from last year. Parent took 2nd place with his time of 21.96. Sam Raitz completed the podium sweep, taking 3rd in 22.21. Cameron McConnell and Josh Thomsen both added to the point total, placing 6th and 7th respectively with the same time of 22.47.
Bethel swept the sprint relays on Saturday, winning both the 4x200m and 4x400m races. McConnell, Nelson, David Myres, and Parent won the 4x200m relay in a program record time of 1:28.40. The 4x400m team of Caleb Ketterling, Raitz, Thomsen, and Victor Lelinga won by over 3 seconds in 3:21.75.
Nick Bovitz earned a podium spot, taking 3rd place in the triple jump. With his 6th and final jump of the day, Bovitz soared to a massive personal best of 13.59m / 44'7".
Evan Larsen threw a season best 14.98m / 49'1.75" in the shot put to place 5th overall. Freshman Timmy Ball took 7th with his throw of 14.61m / 47'11.25".
In the distance events, the Royals grabbed a pair of 6th place finishes. Grant Graber ran a personal best time of 8:36.00 in the 3000m for 6th, and Victor Lelinga took 6th place in the 600m run with his time of 1:22.57.
Following the conference meet victory, the Royals look ahead to the NCAA Division III National Championships in Rochester, New York on March 14th and 15th. The top 20 individuals and top 12 relay teams in Division III will be invited to compete at nationals. Next weekend Bethel will compete at either Wartburg or UW-LaCrosse for a final qualifying meet.
