The Bethel women's soccer team suffered their first tough loss of the season at the hands of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds team, 5-1. The loss, which came after a grueling schedule of five games in nine days, moves the Royals to a season record of 4-1-1 as they head out of non-conference play and into MIAC competition for the rest of the season.
How It Happened:
- The Blugolds struck quickly and mercilessly in the first half, tallying three goals in less than 20 minutes and adding a fourth just minutes before halftime. BU goalkeeper Kate Green and defense found a worthy adversary in the Blugolds' offensive players, who posted 12 shots in the first half.
- UWEC came out strong in the second half too, scoring their fifth and final goal in the 48th minute and building on their already-substantial lead.
- Still, the Royals fought hard to find their way onto the scoreboard. MIAC player of the week Jessica Oliver knocked the ball over to Malia Beilby, who took a skillful touch past a defender and drove to the net. She sent it flying past the Blugold keeper and into the back of the net, preventing a shutout for BU.
- Freshman goalie Autumn Maki had a stellar half for the Royals, making six key saves to hold the Blugolds to only one goal in the second half.
What's Next:
The Royals' demanding schedule continues as they have just one day off before they take to their home turf at Ona Orth Athletic Complex for their first MIAC matchup against the St. Olaf College Oles on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
