VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Bethel Royals earned 14 All-American awards and the men finished 6th as a team scoring 20 points at the NCAA Division III National Championships this weekend. That is the highest team placing at a national championship in program history.
Jacob Parent and Grant Nelson both earned their first individual All-American awards by placing 4th and 5th respectively in the 400 meter dash. Parent ran a program record time of 47.44 seconds as Nelson ran a personal best time of 47.58 as he won his heat.Â
Landen Liu placed 4th in the 60 meter dash for the second consecutive year. Liu used a terrific block start to stay even with the leaders through 40m, eventually fading to 4th in a time of 6.77 seconds.Â
The men's 4x400m relay team of Nelson, Josh Thomsen, Josh Sampson, and Parent ran a season best time of 3:13.17 to take 4th place in the final event of the day.Â
The women's 4x400m relay team of Kelsie Sealock, Hailey Gregg, Abbie Swenson, and Shalom Sulungaine placed 7th with their season best time of 3:50.65.
Annessa Ihde earned her first career All-American award by placing 7th in the 800m run with a time of 2:11.53.
Jayson Ekiyor and Kelsie Sealock both placed 8th in the 60 meter hurdles. Ekiyor ran 8.18 seconds while Sealock stubbled over the first hurdle to finish in 9.21 seconds.Â
Ellie Hernes capped off her season by finishing 18th in the triple jump with a leap of 11.25m / 36'11.5". Hernes - the school record holder - was the first Royal to compete in the triple jump at the indoor national championships.Â
The Royals wrap up their indoor season with a pair of MIAC team titles, 7 program records, 14 All-Americans, and the highest team finish at the national championships - 6th. Bethel will compete again next weekend to begin the outdoor season at the Redlands Invitational on Friday, March 15th.
