Late Surge Lifts Carleton Past Bethel

Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University Women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Carleton College Knights on Saturday afternoon, taking their record to 0-5-3 on the season.  The Royals managed just seven shots in the game, while allowing 16 to the Knights who were able to net all three goals in the final 25 minutes.

The first half proved to be a defensive stalemate as the two teams failed to score and combined to produce just six shots.  There were not many scoring opportunities for either team and both goaltenders were aggressive coming off their lines.

The game was scoreless entering halftime but despite the lack of goal-scoring opportunities, both teams would come out firing in the second half.  The scoring started in the 65th minute when the Knights' Madeline Topf converted a pass from teammate Madelaine Horn.  This came after a fierce attack from the Royals who had controlled time of possession and been stopped on the face of the goal during an early second-half possession.

After the tie-breaking goal from Topf, the Royals had trouble penetrating the Knights defense.  Royal's head coach Amanda Maxwell acknowledged these difficulties saying, "we struggled to get composed and Carleton finished their opportunities."  The Knights would ultimately stifle the Royal's comeback effort with two goals in the final six minutes.

"We battled hard and played great soccer despite the score," remarked coach Maxwell after the game.  The Royals will go on the road to face the University of St. Thomas next on Wednesday at 4 PM, still looking to notch their first win of the season.
