ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Bethel University women's soccer team closed out its home schedule in thrilling fashion on Saturday afternoon, earning a 2–1 victory over Carleton College at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. The win marks one of the Royals' strongest performances of the season, improving their record to 3–12-2 overall and 3–6-1 in MIAC play.
Despite being outshot 24–5, Bethel made the most of their chances through disciplined defending and clinical finishing. Sophomore Malia Beilby opened the scoring in the 37th minute, slotting home her fifth goal of the season after a well-worked play from Sarah Motalebi and Natalie Daniels. The trio's connection gave the Royals a 1–0 lead heading into halftime and set the tone for a gritty second half.
Carleton leveled the match in the 57th minute, but Bethel refused to back down. The Royals capitalized on a late opportunity in the 77th minute when Motalebi—who had already assisted earlier—stepped up as the hero, netting her third goal of the year off an assist from Eva Patenaude. The go-ahead strike sent the home crowd of 123 into celebration as Bethel held firm defensively to secure the upset win.
Bethel's back line, anchored by steady goalkeeping and resilient team defense, weathered 16 Carleton corner kicks and limited the visitors' quality looks late in the match. The Royals finished with seven saves, showing their defensive composure under pressure.
Saturday's win showcased the heart and growth of a young Bethel squad, closing their home slate on a high note while knocking off one of the MIAC's top teams.
The Royals will wrap up their season on the road next weekend, traveling to Macalester College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff in St. Paul.
