MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – For the second year in a row, the Bethel University men's golf team were champions of the Minnesota Golf Classic. The Royals won the 54-hole event by 12 strokes over Gustavus with a record low and one-over-par 865 (287-295-283). That mark best the previous mark of 866 which BU shot in last year's Minnesota Golf Classic. The 283 in the final round ties a program-low.
Bethel's "B" squad finished fifth shooting an 896 (306-294-296).
The field included 16 Division III teams while the 114 individual field included 34 Division I players. The first round was played Saturday afternoon with the final 36 holes being played on Sunday.
Conor Schubring was the Royals' top finisher placing in a tie for seventh after tying the program's individual low round score of 67, the second time carded a 67 in his BU career. That came after shooting a 71 in round one and 73 in round two for a career-best 211 for the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BU led the scoring on par fours shooting 11-over while also leading the par five scoring shooting 15 under. They also led the field carding 44 birdies.
• Schubring tallied 14 birdies on the weekend including seven in the third round. He started his weekend with a bang recording an eagle on the par-five 501-yard No. 1 hole. In round three he was on pace for a program individual record low until a double on 17. He was able to birdie the par-five 18th green carding the five-under-par 67.

David Morton tied for 14th carding a career-best 214. He shot a 71 on Saturday before beginning Sunday with a 73. He shaved off three strokes in the third round thanks to four birdies matching a career-best 70.

Jacob Hall rounded out BU's top-three scorers finishing in a tie for 33rd with a career-best 220. He shot 72 on Saturday before going 78 in round two. He recovered nicely in round three with a career-low 70 going one under on both the front and back nine.

The Royals head east to Altoona, Wis. and the Eau Claire Country Club for the Wrigglesworth Blugold Classic. The tournament, hosted by Wisconsin-Eau Claire, takes place Sunday, Sept 17 through Monday, Sept. 18.
