MONTICELLO, Minn. – Freshman
Will Karkoc didn't let the strong winds bother him Sunday afternoon as the Maple Grove native collected his first collegiate tournament win shooting a one-under 70 at the SJU Spring Invitational. Bethel's "A" team tied for 3rd in 18-hole event at Monticello Country Club with a 309, while the "B" squad placed ninth carding a 320.
Karkoc won the event by two strokes with his new collegiate low. His day started out strong with back-to-back prides on the par three third and par-five fourth. A bogey on nine caused him to finish out the front stretch one-over. Karkoc would not bogey the rest of the day tapping in par the rest of the way with the exception of two birdies both coming on par five holes. For the day he was three-under on the par five scoring.
Ian Stelter was the Royals top finisher on the "A" team carding a 75. Stetler was three-over on the front nine with three bogeys, but came back nicely on the back stretch where he birdied the par-five 12. He finished one over on the back nine going four-over for the day.
The Royals four remaining players all finished with 78s.
Conor Schubring was one of the players on the day to eagle the par-five 502-yard 12th hole.
