RESULTS
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel Royals won 10 of the 17 events at their annual home meet, the Gene Glader Classic. "I'm very satisfied from what our men's team accomplished today," said Head Coach
Andrew Rock. "Sometimes it's difficult to perform well at home, but our guys gave great effort and we came away with some solid performances."
In the sprints,
Malachi Lossow starred in the 60m dash, winning the event in 7.15. The Royals went 1-2-3 in both the 200m and 400m races.
Josh Sampson (22.78) won the 200m,
Joel Smith (22.91) took 2nd, and
Isaac Erickson (23.15) placed 3rd.
Shawn Monroe (50.61) won the title in the 400m, Erickson (50.96) earned 2nd place, and Cooper Hitt ran an indoor personal record of 51.70 to claim 3rd place. Sampson's time of 22.78 ranks 47th in the 200m and Monroe's 400m time of 50.61 ranks 37th on the Division III honor roll. Sampson also won the 60m hurdles in a personal best 8.39, with
Joel Smith earning 2nd place in a personal best 8.56. Sampson's 60m hurdle time ranks 28th in Division III.
In the distance events,
Isaiah Hobus (1:28.33) took the title in the 600m race, with teammate
Carter Woetzel (1:29.84) took 2nd place. Freshman
Dawson Ashley pulled away from the field in the 1000m run to claim the victory for the Royals in 2:49.72. Fellow freshman
Tad Stewart took 3rd place in 2:53.00. After a casual first half mile,
Ike Mendel surged ahead and never looked back in the men's mile, winning in 4:39.50. Bethel's deepest event of the day was the 3000m. The Royals earned the top 4 spots in that race, with Josh Halverson winning (9:11.69),
Jonathan Sweeney in 2nd (9:17.34),
Erik Kivela in 3rd (9:18.24), and
Andy Barnhart in 4th (9:20.11).Â
Bethel took the top spot for collegiate teams in the 4x400m relay with the team of
Dawson Ashley,
Ike Mendel,
Tad Stewart, and
Isaiah Hobus (3:46.09). The fastest team of the day was a quartet of Bethel alums that tallied a whopping 14 All-American awards in their careers in Navy and Vegas. The 4x200m relay team of
Albert Smith,
Jett Hutton-Lau,
Jack Ahart, and
Trokon Karngar took 2nd place with their time of 1:37.41.
The Royals continued to pile up wins in the field as well.
Jake Twogood and
Abe Schlegel went 1-2 in the pole vault, with Twogood coming away as the champion with his vault of 13'4.5"/4.08m to Schlegel's 11'10.75"/3.63m clearance.
Gabe Irons won the 35 lbs weight throw with his toss of 50'10.25"/15.50m. That throw moves Gabe up to number 4 on Bethel's all-time list, just one spot ahead of his brother, Ben.Â
The Royals will continue their season next week at the Hamster Invite hosted by Macalester College. The Friday meet begins with field events at 5:30 PM and running events at 6:00 PM.Â
