GENEVA, Ohio - The Bethel Royals will take home 9 All-American trophies after the conclusion of the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. "Our athletes all ran incredibly today," said Head Coach Andrew Rock. "I'm so proud of the way everyone handled themselves this weekend."
Carl Klamm was the first to compete on Championship Saturday as he raced in the men's 400m. Klamm got out faster than ever before, going through the 200m mark at 21.95. Klamm opened up on the second curve and pulled into 2nd place. He came across the finish line in a personal best and school record time of 46.58 and was awarded national runner-up. "That was the best race I've ever seen Carl run," said Rock. "It was the most amazing way to go out. He has been the man for us for four years and has made a huge impact on our program and pretty much everyone around him."
The women's 4x400m was the next on tap for the Royals. Hannah Sankey led off for Bethel in lane one with a 57.52 split. Delia Labatt took the baton around the bend and then threw in a huge surge to launch the Royals into fourth place. Labatt split 55.98, a season best. Corin McKinstrey ran the best split of her life by a full second and split 57.37 to keep Bethel in fourth. Senior captain AddieKay Johnson held off the 400m national champion and split 55.94 to put the Royals in 4th place for good. "Our women ran awesome today," said Rock. "They really pulled together as a team and everyone had their best splits of the year."
The men's 4x400m relay was the final event of the meet. Shawn Monroe led off for the Royals from lane 6 in a lifetime best 48.41. He handed off to Isaac Erickson who was in a large pack of teams down the backstretch. At the next handoff, Erickson handed off in 2nd place with his split of 47.79. Nolan Metz took the baton around the track in 48.87, equalling his season best split. Carl Klamm showed no fear and went out hard in attempts to catch the leaders. Klamm ended up splitting exactly what he ran in the open, 46.58, placing Bethel 6th overall.
"I don't think we could have asked for a better finish for this group of athletes," said Rock. "I'm particularly proud of AddieKay and Carl, who have given everything they had for this program for four year. They will leave incredibly big shoes to fill not just as athletes, but as teammates, leaders, and people."
