4x4s, Klamm Qualify for Finals at Nationals

RESULTS

BOSTON, Mass. - The goal for the Royals in day one of the NCAA Division III National Championships: qualify for finals. Bethel achieved that goal as they went three for three on day one.

Carl Klamm used his signature kick in the men's 400m dash to run an indoor personal best of 48.50. Klamm had the best closing 200m of anyone in the field (25.21), while passing a competitor in the final 10m. He is the fifth ranked 400m runner in the finals and will run in lane four of heat number two on Saturday. The men's 400m finals begins at 2:40 PM Central.

In the women's 4x400m relay, Bethel came victorious in their heat of the preliminary round with their time of 3:52.10. Hannah Sankey ran hard off the second curve of the banked track at the Reggie Lewis Center, and led throughout the remainder of her leg, running 58.05. Delia Labatt took the baton and split 56.63; her best split of the year. Corin McKinstrey battled with the North Central College runner for the first 300m of her leg. However, McKinstrey proved too strong over the final 100m, splitting 58.69 as Bethel handed off in first place. AddieKay Johnson pulled away from the field and ran 58.74, despite an incident with an official that bumped into her during her leg. The Royals will be in lane five of heat number two on Saturday. The women's 4x400m finals begins at 4:10 PM Central.

The men's 4x400m relay was the last event on tap for the Royals. Shawn Monroe led off for Bethel by running 50.25 as he handed off in third place. Isaac Erickson took the baton and split a season best 49.28 and kept the Royals in third place and close to the leaders, UW-Eau Claire and WPI. Nolan Metz was the third leg for Bethel. Metz sprinted past the WPI runner and handed off in second place as he split 49.70. Carl Klamm received the baton on the final leg 10m behind UW-Eau Claire, but the wasn't too much for the All-American Klamm. He had the best split of the night of any 4x400m relay leg by racing into first place and running 47.78. That quartet ran the second best time in the preliminary round of 3:17.01. They will be in lane six of heat number two. The men's 4x400m finals begins at 4:25 PM Central.
