Bethel Women's Soccer's Record Breaking Season by the Numbers

Royals Record Book

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team enjoyed a record breaking season in 2018 with a multitude of team and individual records being tied or broken along the way. In all the Royals equaled or tied 15 different single season program records during their 13-4-1 run which earned them the second spot in the final MIAC standings and the programs first ever NCAA Regional Ranking. Here is a look by the numbers at the Royals incredible season.

13
The Royals 13 wins equaled the program high which was set two years ago in 2016. The Royals winning percentage of .750 was the best however, eclipsing 2016's .711 (13-5-1). The Royals non-conference wins over Northwestern, Bethany Lutheran, Northland, UW-Stout and Martin Luther came by a combined score of 25-2.

3
The Royals set a new mark for fewest losses in a regular season with just three. Included in those three losses was a 2-1 overtime loss at Augsburg and a 2-0 loss at regular season MIAC champion St. Thomas, the two teams who finished in the MIAC Championship game. The other loss was a non-confernce tilt in the second game of the season at Augustana. The 4-0 loss was a tight game early on until a red card in the 24th minute on the Royals goalie caused Bethel to be a player down for the remaining 65 minutes. Bethel still outshot the Vikings 14-10 on the game despite the disadvantage. Augustana went on to finish 13-3-1 and in second place in the CCIW.

8-2-1
The Royals equaled the 2016 team's win record in MIAC play while also breaking the record for fewest losses with just two. The Royals tie came on the road at Saint Benedict, 2-2. The record was good enough for a second place finish in the MIAC which was also equal to the highest finish in program history along with the 2016 team.

9
Bethel ran off a string of nine consecutive games without a loss in MIAC play. The conference opener at Augsburg and the regular season finale at St. Thomas where the only two losses with the tie at Saint Ben's in the middle. The streak of nine shattered the previous record of five which was done three times in 2012, 2014 and 2016. Bethel outscored their MIAC opponents 27-8 during the streak while also recording a 7-1 victory over Martin Luther in a non-conference game.

28
Bethel obliterated the previous record for goals scored during MIAC play, finding the back of the net 28 times. The previous mark of 19 was set in 2016. Bethel's goal total and goals per game average of 2.55 led the MIAC. The Royals total goals mark of 55 on the season was just one score shy of the program record of 56 set in 2009. That total was tops in the MIAC as well on a per game average of 3.06.

5 & 7
In addition to scoring record numbers of goals, the Royals defense was shutting opponents out at a record pace as well. Bethel posted five shutouts in the MIAC, besting the previous mark of four done in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016. Individually junior Kaylee Peterson recorded seven shutouts on the year, a new benchmark for Bethel. Previously Jen Schockley in 1998, Charli Sorensen in 2006 and Micale Jensen in both 2013 and 2014 had recorded six shutouts in a single season. In five of those seven shutouts the Royals defense limited the opponents to one or zero shots on goal. In a 4-0 victory over Concordia on October 24th, the Cobbers failed to get a shot of any sort off against the suffocating Royals defense.

80
Senior Maggie Sipe equaled the career point total record at Bethel with 80 career points, remarkably in just three seasons of play. Sipe transferred to Bethel from UW-Eau Claire where she played her freshman season and scored one goal for the Blugolds. In her first season at Bethel, Sipe led the Royals with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. As a junior she again led Bethel with 26 points on the year on 12 goals and two assists. Her consistency showed up as a senior as she totaled 26 more points on 10 goals and six assists in teaming up with senior transfer Britney Monteon (39 points) and freshman Rachel Waterman (21 points) to create an explosive trio of scorers.

39
Senior transfer Britney Monteon's 39 points set a new standard for single season scoring at Bethel. Brittany Griffore's total of 35 points in the 2009 season was the previous mark. Monteon scored her 39 points on 13 goals (one shy of the single season record shared by Lauren Johnson in 2005 and Griffore in 2009) and a new record of 13 assists. Monteon's assist total bumped previous record holder Jessica Huseby's total of 12 from 2012. The Blaine, Minnesota native transferred to Bethel from North Dakota State University where she was a three-year starter for the Bison and was named the Summit League Freshman of the Year in 2015.

25/8/9
Monteon was at her best against MIAC competition where she reset all three scoring records for Bethel in MIAC play. Her 25 points was 11 better than Griffore's record of 14 in 2009. She bested Griffore's record of six goals by scoring eight and topped Huseby's assist record of seven by dishing out nine. The assist total led all MIAC competitors both in conference and overall. She was named the MIAC Athlete of the Week on September 24th.

8-1
Bethel played eight regular season home games at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex, going a perfect 8-0. Bethel posted shutouts in five of the nine games and only allowed a total of nine goals at home while 33 times exciting the home crowd with scores of their own. The lone loss of the year unfortunately came at the end to Augsburg in the semi-finals of the MIAC playoffs by a 4-2 score.

MIAC and national awards will be announced in the coming weeks with multiple Royals expected to be honored. Stay tuned to bethelroyals.com for those announcements.
