Box Score 4 BaseballThe Bethel University baseball team split their final double header of the spring break trip against Plymouth State University. The Royals throttled the Panthers 9-1 in Saturday's opener, but could never overcome a 0-5 deficit after two innings of game number two.
Jarad Watts had an exceptional day at the plate, finishing 5-for-7 with three runs and three RBI's. In game one Watts was a perfect 3-for-3. In the same contest,
Tyler Heitmann delivered another sensational performance from the mound. Heitmann allowed just four hits and no walks in a complete-game victory. The junior righty, who had 10 strikeouts (making his season total 29 in three games) allowed the only run of the game on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning. With the split, Bethel completed its trip with a 8-2 record down in Florida and an 11-3 mark overall.
SoftballThe Bethel University softball team experienced heartache once again Saturday, as the Royals won their first game of the day but saw a 5-1 lead in the second slip away in the final frame. BU run-ruled D-Youville College in the opening tilt, as the Royals poured on nine runs in five innings of play.
Grace Thompson and
Kelsey Anderson both hit home runs and it was
Lindsay Edeen that recorded the win. In the final game of the trip, Bethel led 5-1 in the fourth, but allowed seven free passes in the final two innings, which, along with two hits, gave North Central College a 7-6 victory. Following the split, Bethel goes to 9-7 overall and 7-5 in Florida.
Track and FieldResults | The Bethel University track and field teams enjoyed a great day on the track in sunny San Diego, as the Royals competed against nine to ten other teams in the 2015 Ross and Sharon Irwin Invite. Riding the momentum from the MIAC Indoor Meet, Miriam Nordquist finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.55 seconds.
Jillian Krier finished eighth in both the 100- and the 200-meter dash.
Annika Halverson competed in the 800-meter race and finished fourth overall with a time of 2:17.50.
Paige Thielen finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.93, while
Amanda Passaglia finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 40.65 meters.
Elisha Hinton went 11.03 in the men's 100-meter and 22.65 in the 200-meter dash.
Patrick Klamm began his year at 50.17 in the 400-meter dash, while Jacob Harle finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.16 meters. Altogether, Bethel's women finished second out of 11 teams, while the men finished fourth out of 10 teams. Unfortunately for the Royals, they have to wait until April 11 in order to continue their outdoor season at Hamline University.
