WINONA, Minn. — The Bethel University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Saint Mary's to close out the regular season portion of its schedule. The Royals fell behind 4-0 early in game one and were unable to comeback falling 7-4. In game two
Isaac Call gave the Royals an early lead on a three-run home run before the Cardinals opened up a 6-3 lead in the fifth, falling to Saint Mary's 7-5.
The Royals finish the regular season 28-11 overall and 15-5 in conference play.
Game one:
The Cardinals put up a four spot in bottom of the first on four hits, to take an early 4-0 lead.
A pair of
Xavier Lortie and
Isaac Call singles put two on with one out in the second.
Andrew Cardenas drove in one run on a RBI groundout to first to make it 4-1.
Saint Mary's added on in the fifth, with a two-run home run to left and an RBI double to open up a 7-1 lead.
Bethel loaded the bases in the seventh, bringing home one run on a
Matt Friesen Sac fly to center.
Oran Hinkle drew a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to four, it wasn't enough as the Royals dropped game one, 7-3.
Game two:
Bethel struck first in game two, on a three-run bomb to center off the bat of Issac Call in the top of the first.
Holding a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals tied it up on an RBI double to left. Taking the lead in the fifth after scoring three runs on four hits to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
A pair of hit batters in the top of the eighth put two runners on with one out.
Joe Meurer smacked a two-run homer to center, his fourth of the season, to bring the Royals to within one.
Bethel couldn't complete the comeback however, as the Cardinals added an insurance run in the eighth to make it a 7-5 game, which ended up being the final.

The Royals now turn their attention to the MIAC playoffs where they will take on third-seeded Saint John's in the opening round Thursday May 8. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
