Big Second Half Leads to 70-57 Victory over Hamline

Box Score

ST. PAUL—The Bethel University women's basketball team utilized a sizeable second-half effort to overcome a 29-30 deficit at the half and defeat Hamline University 70-57. The Royals (15-6, 13-5 MIAC) got colossal performances from a pair of post players that helped BU score 39 of the team's 70 total points and top the Pipers (6-15, 5-13), who were held to 15.4 percent (4-of-26) shooting from outside the arc.

The Pipers opened the second half with a pair of free throws by Jordan Sammons, who finished with 16 points, to enlarge their advantage to three, but a clutch 3-pointer by Lexi Friesen in Bethel's first possession evened the score at 32 and gave the Royals the thrust going forward in the second half. In fact, BU went on a 19-6 run over a seven-minute period, which gave the Royals ample momentum needed to secure the team's 13th conference victory of the season.

Bethel outrebounded Hamline 46-42 and the Royals forced the Pipers into 14 turnovers. As a team, Bethel shot 43.4 percent from the field and shot 36.4 percent from long range. BU had perhaps its worst shooting performance all year from the free throw line, shooting just 20-of-35.

Rachel Parupsky converted 7-of-12 shots from the floor for 22 points, while Kalli Zimmermann added 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The two helped Bethel outscore Hamline in the paint 38-20. Parupsky grabbed 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season and her third consecutive, while Zimmermann finished with six boards.

Lexi Friesen and Katelyn Vavra poured in seven and six points, respectively, while Micaella Petrich hauled down eight rebounds.

The win helped Bethel further secure their fourth-place standing, as they are a game and a half back of third place behind Concordia College. The first-place Cardinals of Saint Mary's fell to St. Thomas in St. Paul Saturday. The Royals will take on Gustavus Adolphus in their scheduled rematch Wednesday, February 12 in St. Peter, Minn. at 7:30 p.m.
