Box Score ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University Women's soccer team captured their second consecutive victory on Saturday with a 1-0 defeat of the Saint Mary's University Cardinals. The Royals stifled the Cardinals defensively, allowing just two shots on-goal.
On senior day, the Royals' seniors gave coach Maxwell a solid performance on their way to their third conference win in their last four tries. Maxwell acknowledged the efforts of her players saying, "I'm so proud of our seniors and the way they have stepped up and lead our team."
While neither team was able to produce many shots, the Royals kept the ball away from their penalty box and continued to attack the Cardinals as the game wore on. Bethel outshot St. Mary's in both halves and relentlessly pressured the Cardinal's defense with their speed on the outside.
However, the game remained scoreless throughout the majority of the second half and both teams were feeling a sense of urgency. The Royals appeared to have finally broken the tie in the 83
rd minute but the goal was disallowed by the official due to a handball. The crowd erupted in frustration as the officiating crew discussed the call at length.
The match looked to be headed to overtime but seniors
Jessica Huseby and
Olivia Haggerty connected for the game-winning goal with just nine seconds remaining in regulation. Coach Maxwell praised her team's resilience saying, "I'm so proud of the girls for fighting through until the very end."
Bethel would ultimately notch their third win in the last five games and will now look ahead to their next game against the University of Northwestern Eagles on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
