MIAC Release

Saturday the Bethel men's soccer team snapped a 10-year skid against Saint John's, prevailing with a dramatic 1-0 MIAC win over the Johnnies. Royals' senior Tim Ness (Apple Valley, Minn.) was the hero, netting the game's only goal to give his team their first win over SJU since 2004. For his clutch performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Ness Tuesday with the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete-of-the-Week award.

Not only was Saturday's victory over the Johnnies, who finished second in the MIAC Playoffs a year ago, the first in quite some time for Bethel, it also was the team's first MIAC victory of the year. Ness came through with his heroics at the 56 minute-mark, when teammate Danny Jaderholm set Ness up for a header that proved to be the game-winner. The clutch goal was Ness's first score of the season, and he also has one assist for three points while anchoring the Royals' defensive line, playing in all 14 games.

Thanks to Saturday's victory, Bethel improved to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play with three points in the MIAC standings. The Royals are currently in a three-way tie for ninth place. Ness and company hope to continue their momentum with a huge week on the horizon with a pair of home games against teams either tied with them, or one point ahead in the standings. Bethel hosts Concordia Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and welcomes Saint Mary's for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC matchup on Saturday as well.
