ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Concordia-Moorhead Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. The Royals built a two-goal advantage in the opening 21 minutes before the Cobbers rallied to equalize late in the second half.
Bethel opened the scoring in the 13th minute when James Oberholtzer found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Jack Gerber picked up the assist, giving the Royals an early 1-0 advantage.
The lead doubled just over eight minutes later when Tadeo Magana converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute for his second goal of the season, putting Bethel ahead 2-0.
Concordia cut the deficit in half in the 40th minute, sending Bethel into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
The Royals continued to create opportunities after the break, generating 13 shots and seven corner kicks in the second half. Bethel put four of those second-half attempts on goal but was unable to add to its lead.
Concordia eventually found the equalizer in the 84th minute to even the match at 2-2. Bethel continued searching for a late winner, recording three shots and a pair of corner kicks over the final six minutes, but the Royals were unable to break the tie before the final whistle.
Bethel held a 21-11 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in corner kicks for the match. The Royals put eight shots on goal while Concordia finished with seven. Bethel's goalkeeper made five saves.
The draw moves the Royals to 3-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in MIAC play.
Up Next: Bethel travels to Waverly, Iowa, Tuesday for a non-conference matchup against Wartburg College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
