Bethel Can't Closeout Tommies

Royals fall to St. Thomas 2-1

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - After grabbing the 1-0 lead in the opening the period the Royals gave up two second half goals to St. Thomas, which led to the 2-1 loss in the season finale. Bethel celebrated senior day for the Royals in their last home game of the season, but couldn't finish off the opposing Tommies. The loss finishes the Royals season with an overall record of 9-7-2 (4-6-1 MIAC).

Fittingly, the first period gave way to a Sophie Christiansen (Sr., Portland, Ore.) goal assisted by Renn Gardner (Fr., Littleton, N.H.). Christiansen's goal was her ninth goal of the season and her 25th career goal, good enough for fourth all-time among all Bethel players.

In the second period UST overcame the 1-0 deficit scoring the eqaulizer at the 65-minute mark when Nicole Sheehan tipped a ball past Alyssa Riggs (Gr., Columbia Heights, Minn.) to even the score at 1-1. The Tommies delivered the game-winning goal with just over five minutes to play in regulation when Brittany Cochlin tallied her first goal of the game. Bethel was unable to manage a tie after surrendering the late goal, ending the game in a 2-1 victory for St. Thomas.

Christiansen led all Royal players in shots, posting six toward the opposing net. Kelsey Homberg (Jr., Cambridge, Minn.) fired four shots as well. Throughout the Sunday matinee Bethel delivered twelve shots and five shots-on-goal, opposed to UST's eight shots, including four on-goal.

Alyssa Riggs ended her career with two saves in the 90 minute affair.

Head Coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec noted, "Today was a tough way to end the season. We came out and played well in the first half; but we made a few silly mistakes in the second half that cost us the match.  As a program, we have do a better job of playing consistently well for 90 minutes."
"It was fun to honor the seniors today and I wish we could have sent them off with a win.  I am very proud of the way they have conducted themselves all season. Alyssa, Carrie, Sophie, Leah, and Michelle have been through a lot of ups and downs over their years here and I am proud of the way they finished the journey. They are fantastic young women and I am sad that I only got to coach them for one season. They will always have a home here in the Bethel family and I wish them well in all their endeavors."
