NORTHFIELD, Minn. - After a tough 1-0 loss to perenially tough Macalester earlier this week, the Royals brushed themselves off and got back on their horses to take on Carleton, one of the top teams in the MIAC. Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort, the Royals met the same fate and fell by a score of 1-0.
Carleton, ranked #9 in the North Region, imposed its smothering brand of defense and did not allow a Royal to get a single shot on goal. However, an almost equally tough Royal defense did likewise, limiting the Knights to just nine shots on goal all game, and the one goal.
Alyssa Riggs (Sr., Columbia Heights, Minn.), who sat the last two games due to an injury, returned to form today, making eight saves in the contest. Carleton's lone goal came from Zoe Suche, who stole the ball from a Bethel defender and put the ball in the upper right corner from 22-yards out in the 76th minute.
"Today was a very tough day for us. We were emotionally and physically drained from our game on Thursday," said Head Coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "However, I appreciated the effort our women put forth. Carleton scored a fantastic goal and was deserving of the win. We need to mentally refocus and finish the season well next week."
The loss drops Bethel to 8-6-2 overall and 3-5-1 in conference play, while Carleton improves to 9-5-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the MIAC. The Royals return home for their final two games of the season, beginning with St. Olaf on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
