ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals women's basketball team picked up their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win tonight with an 85-74 victory over the Hamline Pipers.
Taylor Sheley (So., Backus, Minn.) led the Royals with 17 points on six for ten shooting from the field and four of five from the charity stripe - all off the bench.
The Royals found themselves down 19-10 at the midway point of the first half, but closed the half on a 15-3 run to head into locker room trailing 30-34. The Royals, who had only scored more than 55 points in two of their previous six games exploded for 55 in the second half alone in tonight's game as they outscored the Pipers 55-40 in the frame. The Royals shot 46.7% from the field in the second half including 5-7 from three point land, but shot an incredible 22-25 from the free throw line.
Shana Grejtak (Jr., Franklin, Minn.) was a major contributor tonight as she finished with a double-double on 16 points, aided by 12-for-15 shooting from the free throw line, while also grabbing 10 rebounds.
Scotti Moats (Fr., Waconia, Minn.) had another strong performance as well as she had a team high 12 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and 15 points of her own to give her her first collegiate double-double.
Kristen Wolters (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) finished the night with 16 points and six rebounds and
Kristi Nye (So., Nashville, Tenn.) led the Royals with six assists while contributing eight points of her own.
With tonight's win, the Royals improve to 1-5 in MIAC play and 2-7 overall while the Pipers fall to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in MIAC play. The Royals look to continue their winning ways Wednesday, January 6, as they play host to the University of St. Thomas. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Robertson Center.
