Rachel Gilbert's (Fr., Becker, Minn.), made a field goal and capitalized on the free throw for a three-point play to tie tonight's game against the Concordia Cobbers at 60. Two overtimes later, the Royals were once again left heartbroken as the Cobbers defeated their hosts 79-75.
Excitement abounded in this afternoon's game that spilled over into the evening.
Kristi Nye (So., Nashville, Tenn.) buried a three-pointer as time expired in the first half to send the Royals into the locker room with a 34-30 halftime lead. Bethel was able to build a seven point lead halfway through the second half before the Cobbers came back to tie the game. The two teams would tie a total of 14 points throughout the night, and there were a total of 13 lead changes.
Scotti Moats (Fr., Waconia, Minn.) led the Royals with 19 points and also pulled down eight rebounds before fouling out early in the first overtime. Nye followed Moats with 18 points, including two clutch three-pointers. Grejtak notched 13 points and nine rebounds, as well as four steals.
Kristen Wolters (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) pulled down nine defensive rebounds and also made a key three-pointer to put Bethel out by six points midway through the second half.
A tired Bethel team began to turn the ball over a little more frequently as the game progressed, and Concordia made the Royals pay for them by scoring nine points off of mishaps in the two overtimes. However, on a positive note, the Royals were an outstanding 23-for-27 from the charity stripe tonight after struggling from the free throw line for much of the season before tonight.
All five Concordia starters reached double digit points, led by Erica Nord, who finished with 21. Anna Matetich posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Tonight marks the third game that the Royals have lost by five or less points to a MIAC opponent. Bethel is now 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference, while Concordia improves to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC. The Royals are scheduled to take a quick jaunt down Snelling Ave. to take on Hamline University next Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. for their next game.
