Box Score

WINONA, Minn. - As they traveled down to Saint Mary's University, the Bethel women's soccer team was hoping to continue piling up goals - and they would have if not for the Cardinal goaltender, Mariana Sanchez. In the first MIAC match of the season, the Royals put together a strong effort, but the Cardinals' goalie made multiple saves, and the score remained a 0-0 tie after two overtimes. In all, Sanchez made 13 saves, keeping St. Mary's in the game and slowing a very potent offense.

Bethel dominated possession and shots, taking 17 shots overall, giving themselves numerous chances. Lydia Bergeson (Fr. Mauston, Wis.) had four shots on goal, while Carolyn Kishaba (So., Eau Claire, Wis.) and Brittany Griffore (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) each had three shots. The Royal's biggest opportunity came in the 41st minute when Kishaba connected, causing Sanchez to make a diving save, with the rebound trickling to Bergeson who put a shot on goal, saved again by the sprawling Sanchez. Anne Fazio (Fr., Holland, Mich.) hit the post in the 40th minute and the Royals kept attacking throughout the match, but could not seem to find the back of the net.

The defense for Bethel was stellar yet again, pushing the team's shutout streak to six in a row. Bethel goaltender Kiersten Hansen (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) saved the only two shots on goal, maintaining her perfect save percentage.

The team's record moves to 5-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the MIAC with Hamline University traveling to the Ona Orth Complex on Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Saint Mary's also stays unbeaten at 4-0-1 and 0-0-1 in conference play.
