ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The last time Bethel played against Carleton in women's basketball, the Royals came away with their first victory over the Knights in nearly 12 years. Today, they made it back-to-back wins over Carleton, proving the first time was no fluke. Bethel's 89-58 win gives them their best record since 1996-97 at 14-11 overall and 13-9 in the conference.
Bethel never trailed past the eight minute mark of the first half, using 17 points by
Autumn Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) to surge to a 44-31 lead heading into the locker room at half's end. In the second half, the Royals continued their relentlessness, and Beasley again led the charge with 10 points to finish with 27.
Shana Grejtak (So., Franklin, Minn.) was the next highest performer for Bethel with 16 points and eight rebounds - five of them coming on offense. She also had three steals and an assist.
Erica Hormig (Sr., Windom, Minn.) was a key factor in the win as well with 11 points, six rebounds, a blocked shot, and an assist.
Annegret Nautsch's (Sr., Everett, Wash.) playing time was limited due to two quick fouls in the first half, but she came out in the second half and made up for lost time by scoring all of her six points and grabbed six of her seven rebounds. She now has a career total of 999 rebounds, leaving her one to go to reach the millennium mark.
Hannah Oken-Berg led the Knights with 12 points, while Megan Erlandson also reached double figures with 10.
As a team, the Royals had the hot shooting hand all game, making more than 65 percent of their shots in the first half, only cooling down to make near 50 percent of their shots from the field in the second half. Meanwhile, Carleton made just a third of its shots, but managed to outperform Bethel at the free throw line.
The win gives Bethel some good momentum going into the conference playoffs. They will be the fifth seed, which means they will take on Gustavus next Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. on the road. At 11-14 overall and 10-12 in the MIAC, Carleton will miss the conference playoffs for the first time since the induction of the conference playoff system.
