ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals women's basketball team team made just a third of their shots from the field tonight as they dropped a MIAC contest on the road, falling to the Macalester Scots 60-47.
It was a tale of two halves again tonight for the young, but talented Royals squad. The first half was a game of momentum as the two teams each strung consecutive baskets together. The Scots grabbed an early 9-5 lead before the Royals went on a 11-1 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Scots clawed their way back into the game later in the half by way of an 11-0 run of their own, taking the lead back 29-20. But, not to be outdone, the Royals closed the half on a 9-2 run to go into halftime down 31-29.
The second half was not as kind to the Royals, as they were outscored 29-18. The Scots came out of the break on an 18-5 run, one of which the Royals had no answer. The Royals were never able to establish any rhythm on the offensive end in the half, shooting just 22.2 percent from the floor compared to their 45.8 percent clip in the first half. Turnovers were also not so kind to the Royals in the second half, as the Scots scored 13 points off Royal turnovers.
Taylor Sheley (So., Backus, Minn.) led the Royals in scoring with 13 points on the night while
Shana Grejtak (Jr., Franklin, Minn.) and
Kristen Wolters (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) each added eight.
Scotti Moats (Fr., Waconia, Minn.) grabbed a team high six rebounds while also shooting a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.
This week's MIAC Player of the Week, Ann Baltzer from Macalester, led all scorers with 20 points.
With tonight's loss the Royals move to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in MIAC play while the Scots improve to 3-3 overall and 3-0 in MIAC play. The Royals look to pick up their first victory of the year this Wednesday, December 9, as they play host to the St. Catherine Wildcats. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
