Bethel University Athletics

Zach Filzen became the 12th head coach in Bethel men's basketball program history on September 7, 2021. Filzen joined the Royals following a three-year stint at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.

PRIOR TO BETHEL
• Spent three seasons (2018-2021) at Lawrence rebuilding the Vikings to a top contender in the Midwest Conference.
• Led Lawrence to most wins since 2013-14 in his first season while setting the program's single-season record in free-throw percentage. 
• Three seasons as head coach at Lancaster Bible College (2015-2018) where he posted a 64-21 record (.753)
• His 64 wins were the second-most in program history, and his .752 winning percentage was best in program history.
• The Chargers were 45-9 in NEAC play during the regular season and appeared in the NEAC Final in each of his three seasons.
• 2016 and 2018 NEAC Coach of the Year.
• 2016 D3hoops.com East Region Coach of the Year.
• NCAA Tournament appearances with Lancaster Bible in 2015-16 and 2017-18.
 
PLAYING EXPERIENCE 
• Two-year starter at University of Buffalo helping his team to a pair of 20-plus win seasons.
• Scored 1,155 career points and set the Buffalo record with 110 three-pointers made in a season.
• Started collegiate career at Northern Arizona University and played one season before transferring to Buffalo.

PERSONAL
• Native of Northfield, Minn.
• Standout player at Northfield High School setting career and season records in points while earning All-Metro and All-State honors in 2007.
• His mother Tammy Metcalf-Filzen is current head coach at Carleton College and coaches previously at St. Olaf.
