ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — On a night filled with nostalgia and celebration, the Bethel University volleyball team delivered a statement performance, defeating Macalester College 3–1 (25–23, 25–20, 17–25, 25–19) in front of a lively crowd at the Robertson Center. The victory lifts the Royals to 12–8 overall and 5–2 in MIAC play, continuing their strong October surge.
The evening doubled as Bethel Volleyball Alumni and Reunion Night, where former players and families filled the stands to honor the program's rich tradition. The current Royals rose to the occasion, showcasing the same heart and grit that has defined Bethel volleyball for decades.
Bethel came out sharp in the opening two sets, using balanced offense and steady defense to edge the Scots in tight frames. Hannah Penke led the charge with 15 kills while adding 17 digs for another impressive all-around effort. Peyton Howie was dominant on both sides of the ball, notching 13 kills, four service aces, and three blocks, while Chiara Houser made her presence felt in the middle with nine kills and a team-high six blocks.
Setter Sophia Rubio steered the offense with precision, recording 42 assists and keeping Macalester off balance with quick tempo and creative distribution. Defensively, the Royals were anchored by Grace Therrien, who tallied 18 digs and added two service aces, while Lauren Hetfeld contributed three aces and solid back-row play.
After dropping the third set, Bethel regrouped with poise in the fourth, jumping out to an early lead thanks to strong net play and key defensive stops. Howie and Penke delivered clutch kills down the stretch, while Houser's front-row presence helped seal the 25–19 set victory and the match.
Saturday's win not only extended Bethel's momentum heading into the final stretch of MIAC play but also capped off a night that bridged the past and present of Royals volleyball.
Bethel will look to keep things rolling as they hit the road on Wednesday night to face Augsburg University at 7 p.m. in another key conference matchup.
