WASHINGTON — The Bethel University volleyball team began their four-game trip out to Washington D.C with two games taking place on Friday. The Royals earned a split, dropping the first game to Gallaudet University 3-0, by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20. Bethel bounced back in the second game, taking down Marymount University 3-0, by scores of 25-17, 28-26 and 25-20. Saturday, they closed out the tournament with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over The University of Lynchburg and Catholic University. The Royals took down the Hornets in game one by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-15. Game two saw Bethel beat Catholic by scores of 27-25, 25-17 and 25-12. The Royals record now sits at 11-4 15 games into the 2024 season.
Game one:
The Royals fell behind 9-5 early in the first set before a pair of kills from
Ellie Van Namen and
Hannah Penke followed by a Gallaudet attack error cut the deficit to one. Down 23-15 late, Bethel went on a 6-1 run to pull within three on a
Peyton Howie kill. Gallaudet went on to take the first set 25-21 however.
A pair of Lauren Hetfield aces tied the second set at 10, before Gallaudet opened up an 18-14 lead. Later
Peyton Howie tied the set at 18 with a kill, followed by
Grace Solberg tying the set at 19 with a kill of her own. Gallaudet went on a 6-1 run taking the second set 25-20.
The Royals found themselves down 9-1 early in the third set, a
Hannah Penke kill later cut the deficit to six. A
Peyton Howie kill followed by a Bison attack error made it a 20-16 game. Gallaudet went on to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Game two:
Bethel grabbed an early 10-8 lead in set one, before a 6-1 run capped off with
Camille Renken kill made it a 16-10 Royals lead. Bethel later opened up a 23-15 lead after a 6-2 run taking the opening set 25-17.
The Royals fell behind 8-6 to begin the second set, a
Peyton Howie kill later made it a 12-10 game. Marymount later tied the set at 14, before an
Ellie Van Namen kill and a pair of
Grace Solberg kill opened up a 17-14 Bethel lead. Down 24-22 late three consecutive kills gave the Royals a 25-24 advantage.
Peyton Howie came away with a kill to close it out with the Royals taking the second set 28-26.
After three lead changes early a
Peyton Howie kill gave the Royals an 8-7 lead in set three. A 6-2 run later gave Bethel a 16-11 lead, back-to-back
Peyton Howie kills later made it an 18-11 BU advantage. Up 22-20 late the Royals closed out the third set with a
Hannah Penke kill taking the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Game three:
The Royals opened up a commanding 10-2 lead in set one, with
Grace Solberg recording four kills. A
Peyton Howie ace later made it a 18-10 Bethel lead,
Ellie Van Namen closed out the first set with a kill making it a 25-17 final score.
Bethel found themselves down 6-3 early in the second set, but a
Brenna Stark kill and
Grace Therrien ace tied the set at eight. A pair of
Peyton Howie kills extended the Royals' lead to 12-10, later
Camille Renken capped off a 6-1 run with a kill opening up a 20-14 Bethel lead. The Royals went on to take the second set by a 25-18 final score.
An early 6-1 run opened up a 10-5 lead for the Royals in the third set. A
Peyton Howie kill capped off a 5-0 run and made it a 15-6 BU advantage, the Royals lead later grew to 20-9 on a
Hannah Penke ace. BU took the third set by a commanding 25-15 final and the match 3-0.
Game four:
A
Peyton Howie kill opened up an early 7-3 lead for the Royals in set one. Bethel later extended the lead to 17-12 on a
Peyton Howie ace. The Cardinals later ro a 20-19 lead, before Bethel tied it at 20 on a kill from
Eleanor Pelzel. A kill from
Grace Solberg opened up a 25-24 Bethel lead with the Royals going on to take the opening set 27-25.
The second set was tied at eight early, but a 5-0 Royals run and a kill from
Brenna Stark gave Bethel a 13-8 lead. A
Camille Renken kill and
Grace Therrien ace opened up a 21-15 Royals lead, closing out the set with a
Brenna Stark kill for a 25-17 final score.
The Cardinals and Royals traded blows early in the third set with four lead changes, Bethel got the upper hand taking a 9-6 lead on a
Grace Solberg kill. A Lauren Hetfield ace later opened up a 13-7 Bethel lead. The Royals closed out the set with a 9-1 run winning by a 25-12 final score, taking the match 3-0.
