RESULTS | Day 1 Recap
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals won their 1st MIAC Outdoor Conference Championship on Saturday, scoring 160 team points to edge out Gustavus by just 6.17 points. Bethel won 3 events, and earned 4 runner-up finishes.
Kelsie Sealock won both the 100H and 400H races on Saturday. Sealock dominated the field in the 100H, winning in a time of 13.91, 0.77 seconds. AnnaGrace Nelson ran a personal best time of 14.96 seconds to earn 3rd place, and Ellie Hernes ran 15.17 seconds to take 6th place.
Sealock came back later in the day to win the 400H in a program record time of 61.85 seconds. Hannah Kvant charged late in the race to take 3rd place in 65.52 seconds, and Jessie Smith was 7th in 66.77.
Annessa Ihde won the 800m run as she kicked away from Carleton's Mary Blanchard in the final 200m to run 2:09.91. Ihde also took 2nd in the 1500m run on Friday in 4:34.72.
Ellie Hernes led the Royals in the field events with a 2nd place finish in the triple jump as she jumped 11.10m / 36'5". AnnaGrace Nelson earned 4 more points for Bethel, jumping 10.80m / 35'2.25" taking 5th place.
Emily Pearson jumped a personal best 3.56m / 11'8" in the pole vault, giving her a 2nd place finish. Raina Kaping cleared 3.26m / 10'8.25" to take 5th place in the same event.
Jireh Babalola had a busy day for the Royals, earning 15.5 points over her events. Babalola took 2nd place in the 100m dash flying out of the blocks to finish in 11.94 seconds. Babalola also ran a personal best in the 200m dash of 25.00 seconds to take 3rd place.Â
The 4x100m relay team of Babalola, Abbie Swenson, Kaping, and Kvant took 3rd place with their time of 48.62, outleaning Concordia-Moorhead by just 0.02 seconds.
Shalom Sulungaine closed hard in the 400m dash and ran a personal best time of 57.31 seconds to take 2nd place. Abbie Swenson took 6th place with a personal best time of 58.45 seconds.
Swenson also took 4th place in the javelin with a throw of 38.18m / 125'3".Â
Nora Wilhelm took 5th place in the shot put with a throw of 12.31m / 40'4.75".
Josie Harms gave Bethel 2 points in the 3000m steeplechase by placing 7th in 11:35.83.
The meet ended in dramatic fashion, with the Royals sealing the team title by winning the 4x400m relay. Kelsie Sealock, Abbie Swenson, Annessa Ihde, and Shalom Sulungaine won the race in 3:52.11, as Sulungaine pulled away from Gustavus' Megan Geraets in the final 100m and gave Bethel the win by just 1.24 seconds.
The Royals will continue their season, competing next week on Wednesday and Thursday at Augustana College (IL), in a final opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships the following week in Myrtle Beach, SC.
