ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals are in 6th place after day 1 of the MIAC Outdoor Championships with 20 team points. St. John's leads with 64 points, Carleton is in 2nd with 58 points, and St. Olaf is 3rd with 52 points.
The Royals got a podium finish from senior captain Sam Gardeen in the pole vault. Gardeen cleared 4.60m / 15'1", and nearly cleared 4.75m / 15'7" on his final attempt, but grazed the bar on the way down.
Evan Larsen and AJ Hokanson scored team points for the Royals in the shot put. Hokanson was 5th with a throw of 14.61m / 47'11.25", and Larsen was 6th with a throw of 14.59m / 47'10.5".
Abe Schlegel had two personal bests on the day and gave the Royals 3 team points. Schlegel took 7th in the javelin with a throw of 50.62m / 166'1", and took 8th in long jump with a leap of 6.55m / 21'6".
Grant Graber nabbed 2 points in the 10,000m run, with a personal best time of 32:02.
The 4x800m relay team of Eli Berg, Luke Peterson, Jonah Kalsnes, and Clark Nelson took 7th place with a time of 8:03.53.
The Royals also advanced many athletes to Saturday's finals, including a historic time from Jacob Parent in the 200m. Parent eased up to run 20.76 seconds - the top time in Division III this year, and the 5th fastest time in Division III history. Here is a list of those that qualified for Saturday's finals:

- 400H - Joel Smith (54.23), Myres (55.55), Sampson (56.51), Thomsen (56.17)
Competition will begin on Saturday at Hamline at noon with the field events, and 1:30 pm with the running events.
