Royals Perform Well at Drake Relays / Macalester

DRAKE RELAYS

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Royals raced well at the historic Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, April 26th before weather interrupted Saturday's finals.

Bethel won their preliminary heat of the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:11.79. Nelson, Josh Sampson, Victor Lelinga, and Parent owned the top time in the preliminary round. This is the 2nd fastest time in Division III - next to Bethel's 3:09.27 from two weeks ago from Joel Smith, Nelson, Sampson, and Parent.

The Royals also ran the 12th fastest 4x100m relay in Division III this season. Landen Liu, Grant Nelson, Cameron McConnell, and Jacob Parent ran 41.22 and qualified for the finals as they won their preliminary heat, and were 4th going into the finals.

For the 2nd year in a row, Jacob Parent took 2nd place in the open 400m dash. Parent ran 46.78, just 0.07 off his personal best time. 

Joel Smith took 3rd place in the 400m hurdles. Smith ran 51.38 to beat top hurdlers from Nebraska, Iowa State, and Kentucky among others.

MACALESTER 

ST. PAUL, Minn - Adam Hokanson won the shot put with a personal best toss of 15.49m / 50'10". That stands as the 45th best throw in Division III this year. Hokanson also took 2nd place in both the hammer throw (50.84m / 166'9"), and discus (40.44m / 132'8").

Evan Larsen won the discus with a throw of 41.00m / 134'6". Larsen took 3rd place in shot put (14.11m / 46'3.5") and 3rd in hammer (49.79m / 163'4").

Pryce Ferrin won the 110m hurdles as he came on strong in the 2nd half of the race running 15.52 seconds. Josh Lee took 4th in 16.02 seconds.

The 4x400m relay team of Tony Haack, Sam Raitz, Caleb Ketterling, and Taaron Rudzitis won in a time of 3:19.94. That time is faster than all other MIAC schools this year.

Clark Nelson and Eli Berg took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in the 800m run. Nelson got out strong and held on to run 1:58.54, while Berg tried to close the gap finishing in 1:59.24.

Sam Gardeen finished in a tie for 2nd place in the pole vault as he cleared 4.45m / 14'7.25".

Sam Raitz took 3rd place in his open event, the 100m dash. Raitz ran 11.09, his 2nd best time this season. 

Tony Haack took 5th place in the 400m dash with a season best time of 51.44.

The Royals will continue with their busy schedule next week, splitting their squad at St. Thomas on Wednesday, the MIAC Decathlon on Thursday and Friday at Carleton, and Hamline on Friday.
