NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Sophomores Syri Williams and Sally Paul finished off the first heptathlon of their careers at the MIAC Multi-Event Championships at Carleton College on Thursday and Friday. "I'm so incredibly proud of these two women," says multi-events coach Kevin Rengo. "Preparing for the multis takes so much time and energy, but it doesn't guarantee results. Syri and Sally showed what they were made of and came away with some of the best scores in the history of our school."
Syri Williams finished 7th overall with 3894 points, scoring the first two team points for Bethel in the MIAC Outdoor Championships. That score is just 6 points off of Bethel's school record, and puts Williams as the second best performer in the event, despite never  having competed in the heptathlon before. Her best event of the meet was the 200m, which she won in 26.91, scoring 719 points. "I couldn't believe the amount of grit I saw from both of our women," says Rengo. "It was especially apparent during the final event, the 800m.  After an emotional two days, they lifted each other up and gave more than I thought they were going to be able to give."
Sally Paul finished 10th overall with 3625 points. Paul is now the 4th best performer in the heptathlon in program history. Her best event of the meet was the javelin throw, in which she took second place with a heave of 33.62m (110'4"), scoring her 545 points.
