ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals competed with their full squad for the first time this outdoor season on Saturday at the Hamline Invitational. "Our women had a very solid start to the competitive season today," says Head Coach Andrew Rock. "It was cold and rainy, but we approached today with a lot of fire and came away with some terrific early season performances."
One of those terrific performances came from four-time All-American Delia Labatt. Labatt raced her way to 2nd place in the 400m by running 56.88. That time puts her 2nd on the NCAA Division III honor roll. "Delia had a fantastic first race," says Rock. "She ran without fear and was very strong in her final 100m." That same race featured All-Americans - and fellow Royals - Hannah Sankey and AddieKay Johnson. Sankey came in 4th place with a time of 58.08, and Johnson earned 8th place with 59.08.
"Grace" was the word in the short sprints for the Royals. Freshmen Grace Perrenoud and Grace Scott both raced for the first time this season in the 100m. While both runners raced into a headwind, Perrenoud took 4th in 13.01 while Scott took 6th in 13.06. Grace Scott teamed up with Ella Elliason, Kelby Olson-Rodel, and Claire Bode to earn 4th place in the 4x100m relay (52.26). Multi-eventer Syri Williams raced her way to an 8th place performance in the 200m by running 27.31. At the end of the day, the distance crew of Grace Cole, Kelly Segura, Laura Luttio, and Malachi Holloway showed off their wheels by racing the 4x400m relay and earning 4th place (4:29.21).
Lauren Wagner took home a 1st place finish for Bethel. On a wet grass runway, Wagner was able to throw the javelin 34.42m (112'11") to win the event by more than 2 feet. Grace Perrenoud made her way to the long jump after her 100m race and leaped 5.05m (16'7") to take 5th place in that event.
The Royals will compete again on Saturday, April 13th. Bethel will take their team to the University of Minnesota to compete at the Minnesota Spring Open.
