Royals Race in Relays at Drake, Men's 4x4 Leads D3

RESULTS

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Royals qualified Evan Hatton in the 800m, a sprint medley relay team, along with both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams for the 110th Drake Relays. Hatton ran a season best in the 800m on Thursday evening. His time of 1:54.37 to place 18th in the event and stands as the 2nd best time in the MIAC this year. Although the 1600m sprint medley relay is not often contended, the relay team of Malachi Lossow (200m), Brandon Loverude (200m), Joel Smith (400m), and Evan Hatton (800m) raced to a 3:31.13, the 8th best time in program history, good enough for 12th place.

The men's 4x400m relay team of Shawn Monroe, Isaac Erickson, Nolan Metz, and Carl Klamm raced their in the preliminary round on Friday. Monroe came out of the blocks and ran the first leg in 48.65, a career best relay split. Erickson took the baton around the track in 48.10 on the second leg and handed off to freshman Nolan Metz, who raced his way to a 49.74 split. Nine-time All-American Carl Klamm had an incredible 46.57 split on the anchor leg to ensure the Royals a spot in the finals on Saturday. Their prelim time 3:13.44 put them at the top of the NCAA Division III honor roll at the time. The Royals decided to opt out of the finals on Saturday due to temperatures in the mid-30s and winds over 20 mph.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Hannah Sankey, Delia Labatt, Corin McKinstrey, and AddieKay Johnson came into the meet looking to get a qualifying time for the NCAA Division III National Championships May 23-25. Their preliminary round time of 3:48.97 will likely do just that as they stand 4th on the NCAA Division III honor roll. Sankey led off in 57.25, her best split of the year. Labatt blazed her way to a split of 56.47 and handed off to the Iowa-native Corin McKinstrey. McKinstrey ran a lifetime best split of 58.50. Johnson anchored for Bethel and brought it around the track in 56.36. The Royals qualified for the finals on Saturday. In the finals, that same quartet placed 6th overall by running 4:01.42 in horrendous conditions.

The Royals will have another busy week ahead of them with four different meets on their schedule. Wednesday, May 1st is the Minnesota Open at the University of Minnesota for the men, along with the St. Thomas Twilight for the women. Thursday and Friday is the start of the championships season for Bethel, as the MIAC Decathlon and Heptathlon will take place at Carleton College. The week concludes with the Meet of the Unsaintly at Hamline University on Saturday, May 4th.
