Men Take 4th at Meet of Champions

RESULTS

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Bethel Royals men's track and field team placed 4th at the Augustana Meet of Champions on Friday, April 19th. "We had an incredible day in all event areas," says Head Coach Andrew Rock. "We had a flurry of PR's on a very windy day. Our men showed a lot of confidence in the work they have put in throughout the year. It was also a unique meet having our women's team not competing. It was great to have their support all day long."

The Royals were led by senior Carl Klamm in the 400m run. Klamm – already the Division III leader in the event – ran a season best time of 47.62 to win the event. Teammates Shawn Monroe and Isaac Erickson also had season bests in the 400m. Monroe ran a lifetime best of 48.63 for 3rd place, and Erickson broke the 49-second mark by running 48.92 and finishing 5th. Monroe and Erickson were joined by freshmen Joel Smith and Nolan Metz to win the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:16.57 – the 4th best time in NCAA Division III.

"The men's 800m was a big highlight today," says Rock. The Royals ran their way to a 1-2-3 finish in the event with Ezekiel Lelinga (1:55.40), Evan Hatton (1:56.14), and Cooper Hitt (1:56.47) each ran season best times. Steeplechase specialist Anders Rasmussen ran a solid season opener. The trio all kicked hard down the homestretch to pass a big group of runners. Rasmussen ran 9:40.35 and took 2nd place. Teammate Caleb Foster broke the 10-minute barrier for the first time in his career and took 8th place in 9:59.06. Andy Barnhart placed 3rd in the 5k with a season best time of 15: 44.92. The men's 10k was run on Thursday evening, where senior Tyler Bethke ran a smart race to earn himself 7th place (32:50.32).

Sophomore sprinter Malachi Lossow had an excellent meet. "Malachi had his best meet in a Royal uniform," says Rock. Lossow ran an incredible bend in the 200m to launch him to 2nd place with a time of 21.99. That is the 2nd best time in the MIAC this year. Lossow also raced his way to a season best 11.18 in the 100m, putting him in 5th place. In the 400m hurdles, the dynamic freshmen duo of Joel Smith and Lukas Walton placed 5th and 6th, respectively. Smith ran 55.36, while Walton had a personal best of 56.43.

In the field events, Boston Knighton-Johnson had a season best jump of 4.20m (13'9.25") to take 6th place. Freshman thrower Dan Johnson earned 8th place in the javelin with a massive personal best of 42.91m (140'9.25"). Fellow freshman Gabe Irons also had a personal best in the throws, with a toss of 43.48m (143'8") in the discus.

The teams will be in action again next week in multiple locations. Three relay teams and one individual qualified for the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines on Friday and Saturday, April 26th and 27th. The majority of the team will compete at Gustavus on Saturday, April 27th.
