NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The men's track and field team had an impressive day at the St Olaf Quadrangular Meet. The Royals were led by their sprinters, earning first place finishes in the 60m, 400m, and 4x400m relay, while taking home second and third place in the 200m and the 400m.
Captain Shawn Monroe led the Bethel 400m crew as he crossed the finish line first in that race with a time of 50.53. That is the best time in the MIAC this year as well as the 20th best time in NCAA Division III. Isaac Erickson was just behind his teammate in 51.02, the second best time in the MIAC and the 39th best time in Division III. Freshmen Joel Smith (51.35) and Nolan Metz (51.56) took third and fourth place for Bethel. Smith currently owns the third fastest 400m time in the MIAC, while Metz has the fifth fastest time of the year.
Erickson, Smith, and Metz were joined by Brandon Loverude to take first place in the 4x400m relay. That team ran 3:24.84, which is the best time in the MIAC and is currently 9th in Division III. Sophomore Malachi Lossow had a terrific day as he won the 60m in a personal best time of 7.08. That time is also the second best time in the MIAC thus far. Lossow came back to take second place in the 200m in 23.06, the fourth best time in the MIAC. Teammate Tyler Sealock was close behind as he crossed the finish line in 23.22.
This distance squad was led by a second place finish in the 800m by Evan Hatton (1:59.09) and third place finishes by Andy Barnhardt in the mile (4:28.73) and Ike Mendel in the 3000m (9:00.49). In the field, Kyle Stichman jumped over 20 feet for the first time in his career and earned a tie-breaking third place finish over teammate Sean Bjork. Both Royals jumps 6.19m (20'3.75"). The throwers had many personal bests on the day, including personal bests in the weight throw from Wes Nelson (13.79m / 45'3"), Gabe Irons (13.35m / 43'9.75"), Odera Onwuala (13.22m / 43'4.5"), and Dan Johnson (12.41m / 40'8.75").
Next up for the Royals: the Gene Glader Classic. Bethel will get to host a meet on Saturday, February 2nd at the Sport and Recreation Center (SRC). Field Events begin at 10:30 AM while running events begin at 11:00 AM. Come out to support your Royals! Â
