ST. PAUL, Minn. - The women's track and field team opened up their 2019 indoor season with a second place team finish at the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic, hosted by Macalester College. "I think we are off to a great start," says Head Coach Andrew Rock. "We brought a competitive attitude to every event tonight and I saw a lot of great support across all event groups."
The Royals won four individual events at Macalester. Delia Labatt obliterated the rest of the field in the 200m by running 26.20, more than a second faster than second place. Freshman Malakai Holloway - a national qualifier in the cross country season - won her first collegiate track race. Holloway used a quick second half of her race to win the 1000m in 3:10.30. In the field, Sadie Koelz took first place in the women's pole vault, being the only competitor over 3.00m (9'10"). Syri Williams earned first place in the long jump with a leap of 4.85m (15'11"). Teammate Claire Bode took second place in the long jump with a jump of 4.65m (15'3.25"). The night was capped off by a Bethel verus Bethel 4x400m relay. The team of Lauren Conradi, Grace Perrenoud, Labatt, and Taylor Finnes won the race in 4:12.87, with the second quartet of Royals earning second place in 4:14.99.
Kelby Olson-Rodel (8.52) and Kayli Knighton-Johnson (8.63) took second and third, respectively, in the 60m dash. All-Americans Hannah Sankey (1:38.65) and AddieKay Johnson (1:39.13) ran in a very fast 600m race and also took second and third, respectively. Sophomore Anna Hage earned second place in the 3000m run. She ran 11:07.21, while courageously leading the field for the large majority of the race. Sally Paul opened her season with a 10.42m (34'2.25) effort in the triple jump, enough for second place, just one centimeter behind the winner.
The Royals competitive season will continue next week, as they travel south to Northfield and St. Olaf College's Quadrangular Meet on Friday, January 25th.
