ST. PAUL, Minn. - The men's track and field team earned the team title at their first meet of the 2019 season. The Royals tallied 70 points to beat Gustavus and Macalester at the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic, hosted by Macalester College. "We had a strong start to our competitive season, especially when we didn't run everyone in their premier events," said Head Coach Andrew Rock.
The Royals took home eight event titles on Friday evening. Malachi Lossow was the fastest man of the meet, winning the 60m in 7.26. In the 200m, Bethel swept the top four places with Nolan Metz (23.18) edging out Isaac Erickson (23.19) for first place. Lossow (23.37) was third, while Brandon Loverude (23.55) earned fourth place. Senior Carl Klamm (1:23.03) led wire to wire in the 600m to take the victory, while teammate Shawn Monroe (1:24.76) took third. Freshman Ike Mendel opened up a large gap in the second half of the mile to win in 4:33.94. Andy Barnhart (8:53.34) pulled away from the field in the final half mile of the 3000m run on his way to a victory. Barnhart was promptly mobbed by his teammates in celebration. The final event of the night, the men's 4x400m relay was a nail biter, as Bethel split their squads evenly and raced in first and second the entire way. The all-freshmen team of Micah Smith, Metz, Tyler Sealock, and Joel Smith held on for the victory in 3:28.43, less than half a second ahead of their teammates. Kyle Stichman also earned an event title for the Royals by winning the pole vault in 3.20m (10'6").
In the 60H, freshmen Joel Smith (8.79) and Tyler Sealock (8.87) earned second and third, respectively. Josh Halverson (2:42.49) used a big kick to put himself into second place in the 1000m run. Wes Nelson earned a second place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 13.23m (43'5"), and a third place finish in the shot put (12.70 / 41'8").
The Royals competitive season will continue next week, as they travel south to Northfield and St. Olaf College's Quadrangular Meet on Friday, January 25th.
