RESULTS - Drake Relays / Gustavus
DES MOINES, Iowa - For the second week in a row, the men's 4x400m relay team ran the fastest time in NCAA Division III. The quartet of Karl Olsen, Isaac Erickson, Evan Hatton, and Carl Klamm placed 6th at the 2018 Drake Relays by running 3:12.18 - the third fastest time in school history. "The Drake Relays have an incredible atmosphere, great competition, and a lot of history behind it," says Head Coach Andrew Rock, who is a 3-time Drake Relays champion. The Royals now lead the second place 4x400m relay team in Division III by 1.81 seconds. Hatton also ran in the open 800m race on Friday at Drake University. He placed 6th with a time of 1:52.67, which is a season best and 20th in Division III this year.
The majority of the track and field team traveled to St. Peter, Minnesota, to compete at Gustavus. The Royals dominated both the 200m and 1500m races on Saturday. Freshman Malachi Lossow won the 200m in 22.63, followed by teammates Elisha Hinton (22.81) in third, and Dan Wahlstedt in fourth (22.90). In the 1500m, freshman Ezekiel Lelinga outkicked the field to win in a time of 4:02.22. David Huffman (4:04.27) edged out his twin brother Taylor Huffman (4:04.40) as they placed third and fourth, respectively.
Anders Rasmussen, one of the top steeplechasers in the MIAC, moved up to the 5k, set a personal best of 15:47.37, and placed fifth in the event. Senior Colton Syler placed fifth in the 400m hurdles by running 1:01.65, while James Moyer (4.35m / 14'3.25") and Boston Knighton-Johnson (4.20m / 13'9.25") placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault, respectively.
"We are moving into our last month of track meets, which means championship season for us," says Coach Rock. The Royals will compete on Saturday, May 5th at the Meet of the Unsaintly hosted by Hamline University, while the decathletes will begin the MIAC Multi-Event Championships on Thursday, May 3rd - 4th at Carleton College.
