ST. PAUL, Minn. - The wait is finally over. The men's track and field team competed for the first time outdoors at the University of St. Thomas on Thursday evening. "After a long time off, I thought our guys competed well and put up some decent performances for the cool weather," comments Head Coach Andrew Rock.
The men were led by their 400m crew, as they swept the top three spots in that event with All-Americans Karl Olsen (48.05), Carl Klamm (48.16), and Isaac Erickson (49.28). Olsen and Klamm are currently ranked fourth and fifth in the 400m in Division III.
Senior Anders Rasmussen braved the cold temperatures to win the 3000m steeplechase. Rasmussen ran a personal best time of 9:46.52, which is the second best time in the MIAC this season. Evan Hatton was the second Division III runner (and fourth overall) to cross the finish line in the 800m. His time of 1:54.54 ranks him second in the MIAC as five Royals broke the two-minute-barrier.
After a strong indoor season, Boston Knighton-Johnson continued his excellence in the pole vault by clearing, 4.25m (13'11.25"), which placed him 5th overall behind three Division I vaulters. With the 4x400m relay team split into two squads, the team of David Huffman, Hatton, Erickson, and Ezekiel Lelinga placed second by running 3:23.56.
"This is the first time we have touched an outdoor track this spring," says Rock. "I was impressed that we were still able to put up personal bests and quality times with all things considered." The Royals will head south in hopes of warmer weather next weekend as they travel to Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois to compete at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 21st.
