VICTORIA, Minn.—The Bethel University women's golf team had an impressive showing during the 2017 Royal Match at Deer Run Golf Club in Victoria, Minn., as the Royals fired a two-day score of 629 at the par-72, 5,801-yard course. The 629 was aided by Sunday's second-round score of 307, which is the lowest single-day mark in program history.
Christine Piwnica earned medalist honors for the third time in her career as she edged the field of 73 golfers with a final tally of 150. The junior fired a 76 on Saturday and finished with a two-over par 74 on Sunday to beat Mae Meiehenry from Gustavus by two strokes.
Just six strokes back of Piwnica was senior
Abby Perrenoud, who took 12th with a two-day score of 156. Perrenoud carded an 80 on Saturday, but knocked four strokes off Sunday for a final round of 76.
Newcomer
Katie Engelking also shaved strokes on Sunday and finished with a 76 after shooting an 82 during Saturday's opening round. Her score of 158 tied her for 13th.
Hannah Williams rounded out the Royals score on both days with an 84 on Saturday and an 81 on Sunday. Right behind her was
Kayla Ruf, who recorded a two-day total of 181.
BU was able to have another team of five competing this weekend, which allowed all 10 team members to compete.
Shayla Norgaard led the Royals' second group with a 177, which was immediately followed by
Kalyn Root and
Haley Prewitt, who each carded a 178.
Bethel's spring season comes to a close next weekend when they travel to Hastings, Minn., to take part in the Carleton Invitational held at Bellwood Oaks Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30.
