ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Saturday is sure to be an important day for the Bethel University softball team as the Royals will look to Strike Out Cancer and win the programs first MIAC Championship with a pair of victories over Carleton College. The Royals have used Saturday's doubleheader to organize a fundraising event for the Hope Lodge in Minneapolis and the Randy Shaver Research and Community Fund to support cancer research. With several players and their families directly affected by cancer recently, the cause is one that is close to the Royals hearts.
Here is a full schedule and breakdown of the day's activities:
Pregame Events• Meet with Randy Shaver - 12:30-1:45
• Line-ups (Players will have purple shoelaces and bows in hair with the color purple and the color of cancer that has affected them most)
• National Anthem
• First pitch by Erick Brask (
Ashton Brask), Gail Thompson in place of Tom Thompson (
Grace Thompson), and Kurt Persson (
Karli Persson) — all of which are cancer survivors
In-game Events• 1-2 Cancer facts between innings
• Certain players are having songs related to/about cancer for walk-up songs
Post-Game Events• Pie in the Face booth (throwing a pie on the players/coaches face)
• Cans booth (Color ribbon on can to show support of someone you know fighting/have fought cancer; stack cans and throw 3 balls at the cans to knock them down)
• Water-Balloon softball (Swing a bat at a water-balloon)
Concessions/Collections• Cancer Sucks suckers
• T-shirts
• Bracelets
• Wristbands
• Jewelry
• Lickity Spoons
• Collecting donations for Hope Lodge/Randy Shaver Research and Community Fund
•Collecting Change Bottles (bottles with change in it)
The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex on the campus of Bethel University. Those unable to attend can watch the action, or follow along with live stats,
