Box Score ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel Royals men's soccer squad defeated the Northwestern Eagles on Tuesday evening 6-1 grabbing their first win of the season. They have now evened their record at 1-1 after their loss to Simpson College last week. The Royals have come out with an aggressive offense to start this season as they have tallied more shots on goal than their opponents in both games.
After the game head coach Jeremy Iwaszkoviec assessed their performance saying, "It was a good result for us. I felt like we attacked the flanks very well, I was really happy to see our guys get on the end of some crosses."
During the preseason, coach Iwaszkowiec talked about establishing a consistent rhythm on offense which would be cultivated by crisp passing and more time of possession. This was a major point of emphasis for his team coming into the season and the players certainly responded to his message on Tuesday as they dominated the time of possession, especially in their blistering first half.
The Royals put forth a strong effort from the very first minute as
Danny Jaderholm and
Ryan Ness were pushing forward and challenging the Eagles' defenders relentlessly. They had several early scoring chances but were not able to put the ball in the net until
Ryan Ness finally broke through against Eagles' goalie Shane Coleman. The strong goal from Ness surely ignited the crowd and consequently opened the floodgates for the Royals as they added four more goals before halftime.
The top goal scorers for the Royals in the 2013 campaign being Jaderholm, Ness along with captain
Matthew Pisarski led the team once again and produced many opportunities for their teammates. The Royals also got plentiful contributions from their bench players such as
Stephen Gronseth who converted two goals during their barrage in the first half. Coach Iwaszkoviec spoke about their depth saying, "In a game like this you get to play a lot of guys. I thought there were a couple guys that really did well with those minutes."
Ultimately it was a great performance by the Royals and something to build off of for the coaching staff. They will play at home again on Saturday against Rockford University at 2 p.m. looking to notch another win and maintain their momentum.
