Bethel Softball Advances to Final Three in MIAC Playoffs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MINNEAPOLIS—Bethel University's softball team lives to see another day in the 2014 MIAC Playoffs, as they followed up a first-round loss to St. Thomas with a 10-6 victory over the College of Saint Benedict in their second game of the day.

The Royals dropped the opener to the Tommies 11-0 and recorded just one hit in the five-inning postseason affair. Caroline Kivisto muscled a single to center field, but was robbed of her second base hit in the game later in the contest. Meanwhile, UST scored five runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth to secure the win.

As a result of the loss, Bethel went on to face Saint Benedict in the loser's bracket at Edor Nelson Field. The Royals showed great perseverance, as they scored first on a solo home run by Micayla Moore to the opposite field. BU then went on two score a pair in the third, three in the fourth and fifth innings, and one more in the sixth for the 10-6 victory.

Kelsey Anderson had an exceptional performance at the plate in game two, finishing the postseason matchup 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs, and three RBI. Caroline Kivisto also had three hits with a walk and she added one run and two RBI. Tara Schinke went 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk and three runs, while Angie Jackson collected two hits, one walk, two runs, and two RBI.

Lindsay Edeen got the nod in game two and finished her complete-game effort with three strikeouts, along with 11 hits and two walks surrendered. The Blazers plated six runs against Edeen, but just three were earned.

With the win against CSB Friday evening, Bethel will play Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday morning at Macalester College at 11 a.m. The two teams both have one loss, so the winner will take on St. Thomas again in the championship game and the loser will see its season ended. Should the Royals advance to the championship game against the Tommies, they would need to defeat UST twice to be crowned MIAC Champs. All tournament information can be seen here.
