Senior Day Spoiled as Pipers Sweep Royals in Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROSEMOUNT, Minn.—For the second consecutive night the Bethel University softball team hosted a home game at the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn. The Royals swept Macalester Tuesday night but their fortune didn't continue Wednesday, as the Hamline University Pipers swept Bethel on senior night with 8-0 and 12-7 decisions. With the pair of losses, Bethel falls to 14-8 in MIAC competition and acquires the No. 4 seed heading into the MIAC Playoffs.

Bethel will face the No. 1-seeded University of St. Thomas at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 2, at Macalester College—one of two host sites in the tournament. Depending on the outcome of their game against the Tommies, Bethel will then play again at 5:30 p.m. that night. The winner will take on the winner of the Gustavus versus Saint Benedict contest at Macalester at 5:30 p.m., while the two losing squads will square off at Augsburg.  For all playoff information head to the MIAC Playoffs website

The Royals collected just three hits in game one against the Pipers Wednesday night, with Cristina Masten, Brooke Charleston, and Shelbi Swenson each collecting a base knock.

Lindsay Edeen did a great job keeping it close, as she allowed zero runs in the first four innings of the game. But Bethel's game one starter gave up four runs—two earned—between the fifth and sixth inning. She struck out four and walked one, while allowing only three hits. With the loss, Edeen drops to 12-3 on the season.

The Royals got out to a smashing start in game two, going ahead 4-1 after the first inning, but an eight-run rally for the Pipers in the third frame put Hamline ahead for good. Bethel would score two more in the bottom of the third and one in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.

BU had 10 hits in game two, with Angie Jackson and Cristina Masten each recording a pair. Caroline Kivisto also had a nice game, going 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Paige Weiske had a trio of runs batted in throughout game two, including a RBI groundout in the first and a two-run single in the third.

Courtney Saurer was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs in 2.2 innings. Saurer falls to 4-9 on the season.

Bethel celebrated three seniors between games. Included in the celebration were Tara Schinke, Brea Vance, and Cristina Masten, who together played in 180 games. Those games totals and their softball memories will grow this weekend when the Royals take on St. Thomas in round one of the 2014 MIAC Playoffs.
