Bethel Softball Splits Saturday Series with Carleton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Minn.—Bethel University traveled down to Northfield, Minn., Saturday afternoon to face Carleton College its final road test of the 2014 regular season. The Royals (21-14, 12-6 MIAC) stole a 4-2 win from the hosting Knights (12-23, 10-10 MIAC) in game one, but couldn't overcome a 5-0 deficit in the second contest—falling 2-5.

Bethel was able to score the first four runs in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader. Micayla Moore's single in the second inning allowed Cristina Masten to score and Kelsey Anderson's RBI groundout in the third put the Royals ahead 2-0 after three frames. BU scored a couple much-needed insurance runs in the sixth thanks to an error by the Knights and a RBI single by Brooke Charleston that scored Caroline Kivisto.

Carleton threatened to over come the four-run deficit in the seventh inning, as the Knights scored two runs and had the bases loaded with one out. But a clutch strikeout by Royals' pitcher Lindsay Edeen and a fly out to center ended the game with Bethel on top.

Edeen picked up her 12th win of the season, improving to 12-2 overall with a 3.38 ERA on the season. Edeen went all seven innings, allowing five hits, two walks, and two earned runs, alongside four strikeouts.

Kelsey Anderson went 3-for-4 with a RBI in the first seven-inning contest. Teammates Abbie Bircher and Cristina Masten each collected multiple hits in the MIAC matchup as well.

Game two started a little rockier for the Royals, as Carleton managed one run in the first inning and four in the fourth. Trailing 5-0 at that point, Bethel was able to muster two runs in the sixth frame, but the late-game rally ended there.

Abbie Bircher and Kelsey Anderson led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. Then with one out, Cristina Masten and Brooke Charleston tallied consecutive doubles that each drove in one run. Charleston's two-bagger chased the Knight's starting pitcher, but Carleton's closer was able to end the inning and pick of the save after a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Kelsey Anderson again had multiple hits, this time going 2-for-2 with a walk and one run scored. Six other players were able to collect a hit, including Masten and Charleston, who each had a double, and Angie Jackson, who finished 1-for-4 with a triple.

Now 12-6 in conference play, the Bethel University softball team remains in third place among the MIAC standings, but holds a narrow advantage over three teams just below them. Saint Benedict stands at 11-7, while Hamilne and Carleton each have 10 wins. The Royals finish their regular season Monday and Tuesday this week, as they host both Hamline and Macalester at Ona Orth Complex.
