Hitting Spree Helps the Royals Sweep the Cobbers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOORHEAD, Minn.—After splitting the series agaist Gustavus Adolphus College yesterday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn., the Royals continued their road trip to Moorhead, Minn., to take on Concordia College at Jake Christiansen Stadium.

Bethel jumped on top right away in the first frame, as Caroline Kivisto drove in Angie Jackson to cross the plate for the first run of the series. It was all Bethel's game from then on, as the Royals tallied another seven runs in the next two innings. Angie Jackson and Abbie Bircher both tallied a RBI in the second frame along with a handful of Royals being hit-by-pitch in the third, to make the score 8-0 after the third inning.

The Cobbers tried to start something in the home half of the third inning, as Paige Beseman homered to center field to put a mark on the board for the home team. But that didn't seem to faze the Royals, as Paige Weiske, Micayla Moore, and Shelbi Swenson each found open space during their next at bat, each driving in a run to make the score 11-1 going into the bottom the fourth.

Concordia started the home half by hitting a pair of home runs, but couldn't continue scoring. In the fifth inning, Winona transfer, Kelsey Anderson answered with a two-run bomb to center to continue the spree for the Royals. Paige Weiske mustered an RBI walk that brought in Caroline Kivisto and eventually ended the game on the mercy rule, 14-3.

Bircher, Kivisto, Thompson and Weiske were perfect from the dish along with eight Royals having one or more hits in the first matchup.

Hurler Lindsay Edeen pitched a complete game for the Royals, giving up only four hits and three runs. Edeen improves her record to 9-2 on the seaon.

Game two of the series started much like the first, as the Royals scored first and didn't let up. Abbie Bircher drove in a run and Paige Weiske followed suit, plating two more runs to end the first frame 3-0. Caroline Kivisto and Cristina Masten joined in on the spree in the second frame with a pair of RBI's, to improve the score to 5-0 going into the 4th inning.

In the 4th, the Royals continued to score as Kelsey Anderson started by hitting a sacrifice fly to plate Jackson. Abbie Bircher then scored on a passed ball and Masten followed up the scoring by hitting a single down the right field line that scored Kivisto and put Bethel ahead 8-0. Kelsey Anderson singled to right field in the fifth inning which led to Jackson scoring by an error by the right fielder. That was it for game two as the Royals blanked the Cobbers 9-0 to complete the series sweep.

Jackson, Bircher, and Weiske were perfect from the dish again in the second outing, including seven Royals tallying one or more hits in the game.

Karli Persson gave the Cobbers a goose egg, as she also hurled a complete game and gave up seven hits with no runs scored to improve to 5-4.

Bircher went 5-for-5 with a walk, while Weiske went 4-for-4 with two walks in the series. Jackson finished the doubleheader going 5-for-6 with a walk and improved her batting average to .452 on the season. The Royals totaled 29 hits in the series and tacked on 21 RBI.

With the sweep, the Royals improve to 17-12 (8-4 MIAC) overall. The Royals will have a one-day break tomorrow, before returning to the diamond Monday at 2 p.m. to face Saint Mary's University at Ona Orth Complex.
