Royals Can't Complete Sweep Against Auggies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MINNEAPOLIS—Fresh off a pair of MIAC sweeps last week, the Bethel University softball team was looking for two more Tuesday night at Augsburg College. Despite a 12-1 victory in the first contest, the Royals (14-11, 5-3 MIAC) were unable to complete the sweep, as the Auggies (6-25, 4-10) protected their home field with a 4-2 win in game two. Tuesday's twin bill was the beginning of one crazy stretch for Bethel, as the Royals softball club will endure six doubleheaders in a seven-day timespan because of the recent weather and field conditions.

The Royals got an early lead in the first game, thanks to two runs in the top of the second inning. Five runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh were more than enough, as Angie Jackson's three-run double and a pair of RBI for Kelsey Anderson helped Bethel secure the 12-1 victory.

BU carried its momentum from game one into game two early, putting up two runs in the first two innings. But Augsburg's Olivia Boerschinger shut down the Royals in the final five innings, while the Auggies scored four unanswered runs.

Lindsay Edeen continued her success for Bethel within the circle, as the sophomore righty tossed a complete-game gem. Edeen allowed one run on three walks and four hits, while striking out five. With her performance Edeen improves to 7-2 on the season with a 2.82 ERA.

Several Royals had success at the plate Tuesday evening. Kelsey Anderson went 1-for-5 with a double, but led the team in runs batted in—driving in four runs for BU. Ange Jackson finished 2-for-7 with a walk and two doubles, which helped Bethel's shortstop drive in three runs and score three more. Additionally, Cristina Masten went 3-for-8 at the dish with two runs scored and Shelbi Swenson was 2-for-3 in game two.

Karli Persson got the nod in game two, allowing two earned runs (four total) in four innings pitched on five hits and zero walks. Persson fanned two Auggies at the plate. Courtney Saurer was asked to finish the game for the Royals in relief, allowing just one hit and two walks, with one strikeout and no runs scored.

Bethel returns home Wednesday afternoon to take on Macalester College at Ona Orth Complex. Live stats and webcast will be available for both games with first pitch scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
