Box Score 2 VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn.—Head softball coach
Rod Radcliffe won his 200th game as the skipper for Bethel University's squad Wednesday evening in memorable fashion, as the Royals topped No. 7-ranked Luther College in the Vadnais Sports Center in Vadnais Heights. The Norse had established a 7-0 record on the season and topped Bethel 4-6 in the opener after a two-run sixth broke a 4-4 tie. But the Royals fought back in game two, jumping out of the gates with a 4-0 lead after the first inning and never looking back.
Game One: Bethel 4, Luther 6
Kelsey Anderson helped the Royals start the day off on the right foot, as the sophomore transfer clubbed a three-run home run over the left field fence in the first inning. Anderson blast with a 3-2 count scored both
Angie Jackson and
Abbie Bircher, who singled and walked respectively.
Unfortunately for Bethel, the Norse scored in three straight innings and the Royals were only able to muster one more run in the contest on a solo shot to center field by
Caroline Kivisto in her first game with the team after an extended hockey season. Luther then answered Bethel's two home runs with a knockout homer of their own—a two-run slam in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bethel finished with five total hits; however, no one tallied more than one in the first tilt. Anderson and Kivisto were the only ones to record a multi-base hit and also the only to drive in a run.
Courntey Sauer pitched a complete-game for the Royals, allowing 12 hits and three walks in the afternoon affair. Sauer struck out three as well.
Game Two: Luther 2, Bethel 5
The second game of the series began very similar to the first, as the Royals again put up a big lead in the first inning. This time Bethel scored four runs in the bottom of the first, as
Angie Jackson,
Kelsey Anderson,
Caroline Kivisto,
Shelbi Swenson, and
Tara Schinke all singled in the frame.
Luther got one back in the second and one more in the third, but that would be all. The Royals added an insurance run in the fifth, thanks to an Anderson double—which neared her second homer of the day—that scored Jackson.
Bethel put together 10 hits in the second session, including
Kelsey Anderson's 3-for-3 total at the dish. Anderson and
Angie Jackson each had a double and together managed to go 5-fo-6. Jackson also scored twice.
Shelbi Swenson finished 1-for-2 with a walk, alongside a RBI and run scored.
Karli Persson got the nod in game two, however,
Lindsay Edeen toed the rubber for the final 4.2 innings. Edeen, who earned her first collegiate win, allowed just three hits and three walks, while striking out five—including one in the third with the bases loaded and one out.
Conclusion
