ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team saw the 2013 season come to a close in a 4-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College, who clinched the MIAC title with the victory and improved to 9-0 in conference play. The Royals honored their five seniors on the roster and put up an inspired effort but the Gusties consistent pressure provided two goals in the first half and two in the second. Bethel was able to crack the Gustie defense with a goal by
Jeremy Tan, his first of the year, in the second half.
"
Hats off to Gustavus as they are a quality side deserving of their MIAC conference championship," said Royals coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "They were disciplined defensively, dynamic offensively, and their commitment to playing is phenomenal. I thought we showed some spirit today and put up a good fight."
Gustavus' leading scorer, Zach Brown, scored both Gustie goals in the first half. The first came at the 26:52 mark on a header off a corner kick while the second came just nine minutes later. Gustavus wasted little time adding their third goal in the second half as they scored 52 seconds into the period. The Royals were able to score just the eighth goal of the season given up by Gustavus with four minutes remaining in the game.
Jeremy Tan punched one home in the middle of the box and was assisted by senior
Martin Manocchio. The Gusties answered with a score of their own just over a minute later for the final 4-1 score.
"Again, we conceded goals on a few set pieces which has been our Achilles heel all year," coach Iwaszkowiec said. "However, I was proud that we found the back of the net. Marty Manocchio did well to earn his assist and Jeremy Tan tucked his shot very nicely in the corner. It was a quality goal."
The win clinched the MIAC title for Gustavus who still has one game to play on Saturday against Hamline in order to complete a perfect conference record. The loss ends the Royals season at 2-8 in MIAC play and 5-13 overall. Five seniors played their final match on Tuesday and Bethel will miss the contributions of
Cody Walkup,
Kolten Fischer,
Martin Manocchio,
Chris Scott and
Ryan Thompson.
"
It was an emotional Senior Day honoring some great kids. Cody, Kolten, Ryan, Chris, and Marty are all fantastic individuals. They have been such a great example for the younger guys. We will miss them moving forward but are very excited to see where God leads them in life."
