ST. PAUL – The Bethel University men's soccer team traveled down Snelling Avenue Saturday afternoon to take on Hamline University and suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the Pipers. Hamline was able to score early in the second half and held off the Royals to earn the MIAC win. Bethel outshot Hamline 11-9 with six shots on goal but were unable to capitalize on their chances.
"This game really sums up our season," said Royals coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "Play well, create chances that we don't finish, conced a set piece, and lose. It is frustrating and I feel for the guys. They are working hard and deserve some results. No offense to Hamline who worked hard and earned the victory but we missed an opportunity today."
Hamline's goal came just over five minutes into the second half and the Royals nearly tied the game shortly after but
Luke Chase's shot hit the crossbar. The Royals sent three more shots into the box but were turned away by Hamline's goalie Derek Mora. Bethel senior goalkeeper
Chris Scott made six saves in goal for the Royals.
"Hamline's goalie deserves a lot of credit making two huge saves in the first half," said coach Iwaszkowiec.
The loss drops the Royals to 5-12 on the year and 2-7 in the MIAC. Hamline picked up their first MIAC win, improving to 1-6-1 and 5-9-1 overall. Bethel will return home for their final game at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex in 2013 when they host Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday afternoon. The match will begin at 3:30 p.m.
